A Thought…

So I was lying in bed the other night, thinking about finances.  And I had this thought:

When you go to a restaurant you tip the waitress based upon what they bring you (or, based on what you order but just work with me here for a moment).   Most people tip like 15% – 20%.  But when we go to church, and we “tip” God based upon what he gives us we only tip 10%.  Now I’m guilty of that too.

But why is it that we tip the waitress more than we tip God?

  1. I don’t know that it is always necessarily true. Some christians are notorious for leaving tracts instead of tips.

And God doesn’t need to make a living, there’s always that.

  2. I’m not making a stand against tithing… I just like the debate. :)

  3. It’s okay Hannah, I know you’re always good for a debate. (Although I’m a little saddened you didn’t take me up on the Sharpton debate a few posts ago).

You’ve got a good point that God is always there, but with that mind set don’t we take him for granted way to often? And the money doesn’t go directly to God, it goes to spread His word throughout the communities and the world. He does need our help for that.

  4. Since when is tithing considered tipping? Tipping implies that the server should give us good service and, ideally, the size of the tip should reflect the quality of service. Saying that tithing is like tipping would be saying that we should only tithe when God does what we want him to. Tithing is something completely different.

The other broken area of the analogy is that tipping is 15-20% of what we pay while tithe reflects how much we earn.

I also dodged the Sharpton bit because I did not have the time to go create a compelling response. :)

  5. You make a good point there babada, which I find well taken.
But also disappointed you didn’t take me up on the other debate. :)

  6. Well if you live in good old South Dakota the Waitresess or Waiters only make $2.50 per hour. Then their tips get added on to that and they usually make about $11 to $12 per hour. If they do not make minimum wage by law the resturant is required to pay them minimum wage.
As for tithing your supposed to Tithe to your home church. Then your supposed to give up and above that to other charities and causes. So really you can give more than 15% to charities and other orginizations. And no one says you have to tip your waitress 15% to 20%. Although I do tip I think it is unfair becuase I never get a tip from a customer for helping them at the bank. So why should I tip for someone doing their job. I don’t think its fair.

  7. Tipping is effectively paying the person for the services they provide, based on how much the service is appreciated. The concept of paying God based on satisfaction with service provided not only seems a little odd, but brings up issues related to the nature of God and relationship with man.
